Following the visit of Cape Cornwall Singers to
Australia in 2001, an informal 'Sister Town' relationship has been formed
with the mining town of Burra, which is located about 100 miles north of
Adelaide. The Town Council here at St Just has exchanged information and
publications with the Regional Council of Goyder (the local authority for
Burra) and the publications on the area surrounding Burra are
available as a community resource from the Town Council here at St Just. The
three local schools at St Just and Pendeen have expressed their support
and will be linking up regularly to exchange information through their web
sites. These links will be invaluable in maintaining and developing this
relationship and hopefully the thirst for knowledge on our strong and
historical links will encourage the young people to further research the
subject.
In 1847 600 men from the parish of St Just arrived in Burra to work in the mines and by 1849 Cornish miners had set up their own little Cornwall - naming the streets after towns and villages. St Just Street, Ludgvan Street for example and the first County Gaol in South Australia was named Redruth Gaol. Cornish Chapels were built for their Sunday worship. To visit the website of Goyda Regional Council, which covers the Burra district, follow this link to Goyder Regional Council. |
