There is much concern locally and nationally about the removal of free TV licences for the over-75s, which came into effect on 1st August, despite a major campaign by Age UK and other organisations. The first step towards helping some of those affected by this is to encourage all over-75s to apply for Pension Credit, as this would enable free TV licences as well as an increased income.
Cornwall Council special road signs for St Just, were put in place just over three weeks ago to protect pedestrians in St Just by slowing the traffic, they were taken sometime over the weekend. If anyone has any information about their unauthorised removal, please contact the Police or Cornwall Council or Town Council.
These signs were the key part of the Town Council Coronavirus safety plan which was based on widespread support from residents and businesses to reduce the speed of traffic through the town, to protect pedestrians at a time of social distancing. We had been relieved that there had been no accidents despite very busy conditions in the town, and it seemed clear that the signage was working in slowing the traffic. “Why would anyone take away road signs put in place to keep people safe? It makes no sense. The Town Council are concerned about the risk to its pedestrians while social distancing continues, if we can’t continue to reduce traffic speed.
The Town Council would appeal to whoever took the signs to return them quickly, please. They can be left outside Clemo’s Top Shop in Fore Street, or outside the Library in Market Street, or simply put back where they were taken from, so that the signs can continue to keep our residents safe.”
