Bosavern Community Farm News

Do you know someone who might benefit from meeting and bonding with new people and gaining some skills working on the land, cooking and perhaps needs some encouragement to apply for work or college? Through our contacts, creativity, tailored support and lots of encouragement, we are working with formerly very disengaged local people, and successfully supporting them into jobs or training with heartening results. Everyone taking part over the past year has reported feeling less isolated, less anxious and more useful, motivated, hopeful and more connected as a result of joining our project. Once people are signed up, we go the extra mile to overcome all barriers to work, but due to the nature of hard-to-reach groups, we do find it tricky to recruit a new batch of participants at the start of each course (last time we had so few referrals, we resorted to door-knocking!). We’ve had one person from Treen but approximately half our participants to date live in the very local areas (St. Just, Sennen, Pendeen, St Buryan) and the other others tend to travel in from St Ives, Gulval, Penzance, Heamoor and Newlyn by bus to St Just followed by a short group-walk across the footpath to the farm. We can provide full PPE and reimburse bus fares, petrol and childcare costs. If it helps to get people out to us the very first time, we provide lifts or taxis.

I would appreciate your support to get the news out ahead of Christmas for our Jan-Apr 2022 course and to encourage folks to attend one of our Thursday Taster Days during December and January. As you well know, many people find it very difficult to pick up the phone initially without a familiar, trusted contact to encourage and introduce them face-to-face. This is where I’m hoping you and your community contacts can help. There are also some good short films on youtube which can help to demystify and to prepare people: Bosavern Training & Work Experience Short Films on YouTube

In other news we were delighted to be voted Best Community Group 2021 by St Just Town Council last month and at the weekend we were Highly Commended by the Cornwall Sustainability Awards. Our farm has been community-owned for over ten years now, providing Friday veg boxes to customers across Penwith, caring for over 400 chickens, home to several bee hives, a community woodland and community allotments.

St Just-In-Penwith Town Council’s Grants Scheme

The Town Council’s Grants Scheme is open to community organisations based in or working in St Just and Pendeen and the surrounding villages of Bojewyan, Boscaswell, Botallack, Carnyorth, Nancherrow, Tregeseal, Trewellard and Truthwall. Organisations can apply for a grant for any project or activity which is for the benefit of residents. Stories, songs, art and a night under the stars at Eden Sleepout – November 25, 2021

Top storytellers, great music, homemade pizzas, campfire chats, illustration classes and bedding down in the night air are all on the menu when fundraisers gather for Sleepout at the Eden Project on November 25.

The event raises much-needed cash for two vital South West charities supporting people facing homelessness. They say the extra funds can be life-saving, going into an uncertain winter when a huge demand for help in the region is at its highest for three years. Sleepout has been held at Eden single homeless people since 2014 and is working to end homelessness in Cornwall, and The Amber Foundation, which has three residential centres supporting young people who have no home to find housing and work.

There will be a public referendum on the Plan early in 2022. Following public consultation and amendment, the draft Plan was submitted to an Independent Examiner, who made further alterations. The Town Council approved the final version in September 2021, and it has now been signed off by Cornwall Council. It will go a public referendum early in 2022. Meanwhile, planners must `have regard to’ its provisions.
