Important Information to Help Support our Community

The Foodbank in Penzance has been supporting our local Communities for a number of years now, and each week the collection boxes in the Co-Operative , St. Just and the Costcutter Store in Pendeen contribute to the food, household and personal items that are distributed in this part of West Penwith.

For the generous support of our community in maintaining the Foodbank, very many thanks.

Recently it was realised that the difficulty and cost of transporting food, and other essential items for a family, from Penzance to out-lying areas such as St Just and Pendeen may be deterring people from asking for support from the Foodbank.  To this end, we would like to make sure that people know that they can ask for Foodbank goods to be delivered to them.  They will be asked to ring the Foodbank number and give their order and this order will be delivered to their house, and their vouchers collected. We regret that it’s not possible for our car drivers to take people to the Foodbank to collect their food for insurance reasons.

If you need support from the Foodbank please don’t hesitate to call 07950 159841, and someone will explain how it all works and what to do next . If you are in crisis the Foodbank responds very quickly.

Community Performers Wanted

The 1st July 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.  On this one day alone in 1916 the British casualties totalled nearly 58,000 troops, with over 19,000 killed.

As part of the First World War Centenary commemoration, and the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site’s Tinth anniversary programme, a remarkable event will take place near the cliff tops at Levant Mine in Cornwall.  Produced by Collective Arts Ltd, a theatre company that specialises in large scale community productions, The Trench is a cultural event that explores the contribution made by Cornish miners serving on the Front Line during the First World War. 

The production is in partnership with Levant Mine and the National Trust, Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, Miracle Theatre, Tremough University and local schools in Penwith.  Research is well underway and locals in Penwith, the St Just and Pendeen Old Cornwall Society, along with students from Tremough are helping uncover information relevant to the production.

The company are looking for physically fit individuals to rehearse as community performers for the event.  Their task will be to guide the participants throughout the performance.  Rehearsals will take place in St Just-in-Penwith and begin in May 2016.

Town Council Calls Public Meeting to Seek Local Community View

Dog Ban on the Plain-an-Gwarry

The Town Council  at its meeting on 7 April 2015 took the unanimous decision to ban dogs from the Plain-an-Gwarry, St Just due to the potential health risks to the public following an increase in dog fouling in that area.  The Plain-an-Gwarry, is a protected scheduled ancient monument, used to host a variety of public events and the increase in dog fouling was causing the Council considerable cause for concern.

Library and One Stop Shop Service Consultation

 

 

2 April 2015 – Briefing note from Cornwall Council

  

Following agreement on the Council’s four year budget plan, approved in February, Cornwall Council is having to review the library and one stop shop service.

As part of the £176 million savings that have to be made over the next four years, savings of £1.8 million have to be made from the library and one stop shop service’s £4 million budget.

Cornwall Council wants to hear from as many people as possible to help shape its proposals.

Please help to promote the consultation and direct people to either attend a drop-in session and /or complete the survey questionnaire, which is available online and in hard copy.

Information will be available on the Council’s website along with a link to the survey questionnaire.

Public consultation

The 10 week public consultation and engagement will began today ,2 April and will end on 10 June 2015.

Drop-in sessions

Cornwall Council will be holding public drop in sessions in branch libraries.

The public can be involved in the consultation in a number of ways, including:

  • In person by attending a drop-in session at one of our libraries;
  •  Using the online questionnaire available on the Council’s website; www.cornwall.gov.uk/librarysurvey;

Stakeholder Workshops

Stakeholder workshops will be held for our Town and Parish Councils and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise stakeholders, so they can be involved in helping to shape our proposals.

Information days

Information days will be held in May for companies and organisations interested in running part or all of the library and one stop shop service.

A Business Case form is available on the Council’s website for organisations interested in or considering this option.

Dog Fouling in the Plain-an-Gwarry

The Plain-an-Gwarry is owned by the Town Council and it is for the use of all the residents in St Just.  At the present moment mindless individuals are letting their dogs foul within this grassed area and they are spoiling it for the vast majority of people.

Kevin McFadden, Town Mayor has said that “If this continues the Town Council will take necessary legal action to have dogs banned from the Plain.”

Essential Maintenance – Lafrowda Car Park

Lafrowda Car Park, St Just will be closed next Monday 15 December 2014 for white lining.  However, parts of the car park will be re-opened as the lining works are completed in an attempt to keep disruption to a minimum.  The work is also weather dependent as dry conditions are required.
