The Co-Cars Car Club could be the way to reduce levels of car ownership and enable people to hire electric bikes

Join – Click – Swipe – Drive

Co-Cars Car Club logoCo-cars car club provides its members with the convenience of a car without the hassles and costs of ownership. Members pay for a car only when they want to use one. Ideal for occasional drivers, short trippers and families who want to get rid of or can’t afford a second vehicle. Local businesses, residents and visitors can all benefit.

We want to know whether there is enough interest to have a car based in the St Just/ Pendeen area or perhaps Penzance.

A Co-Car electric car being recharged by a womanIndividual and household membership is just £25 per year, and there are two pricing options for businesses. Each hire costs just £3.75 per hour plus 18p per mile, with discounts for daily hire. Fuel, insurance, tax, maintenance and emergency cover are all included so there are no hidden costs.

Car sharing with Co-cars is easy. The Company has streamlined the process down so members just have to “Click, Swipe and Drive”. Members can book a car 24/7 on-line or via a smartphone then, at your booked time, swipe your membership card against the windscreen to unlock the car, enter a PIN and drive off. Simples! Hire is by the hour, with pick-up and return to the specially-reserved parking places.

Two cyclists using electric bikes provided by Co-bikes with Exeter Cathedral in the backgroundCo-cars also operate Co-bikes, the UK’s first on-street, city-wide, electric bike network being in Exeter. But, would there be enough interest to have a scheme in West Cornwall?

Co-cars is a not for profit Co-operative social enterprise based in Exeter. It operates in Devon, Wiltshire, Dorset, and more recently starting in Cornwall and has the biggest car club fleet of low emission petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles in the area. Co-cars membership provides access to all Co-cars vehicles which are currently only in Truro and Falmouth in Cornwall at the moment but they are keen to expand.

Their electric cars and bikes are powered by renewable energy from Good Energy. The aim is to provide shared sustainable transport for all.
